Non-uniform pulmonary diffusion as demonstrated by the carbon monoxide equilibration technique: experimental results in man.

چکیده
Available evidence indicates that pulmonary diffusion is distributed in a non-uniform manner throughout the lung; the pertinent literature was reviewed briefly in the preceding paper of this series (1). Conventional methods for measuring the pulmonary diffusing capacity do not allow a quantitative assessment of this non-uniformity, and, in the presence of uneven diffusion, may yield erroneous values for total DL.1 This prob-

The Adverse Effects of Nicotine and Carbon Monoxide on Cardiovascular Disease
Cigarette smoking causes injury of coronary arteries as well as other arteries. Sudden death is more frequent in heavy smokers than in non smokers. Studies showed that dangerous arrhythmias will be the result of effect of nicotine when injected in the animals. Carbon-monooxide is also dangerous for man when it is produced by smoking. The prevention of heart disease will be more satisfactory ...
متن کاملEffect of hyperlipidaemia on pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide.
There is conflicting evidence on the effect of hyperlipidaemia on pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO or TLCO) in man. We have measured the carbon monoxide transfer factor per unit alveolar volume (TLCO/VA or KCO) by the single breath method in 25 patients with hyperlipidaemia, and in three normal subjects before and after infusions of an intravenous fat emulsion, Intralipid....
متن کاملEnd-tidal Carbon Dioxide Measurements in Unintentional Non-Fire-Related Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Background: Poisoning with carbon monoxide occurs occasionally worldwide, and the gold diagnostic standard is to measure carboxyhemoglobin level in the blood. This study investigated the correlation between carboxyhemoglobin and the end-tidal carbon dioxide levels in 50 patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. Methods: We recruited 50 volunteer patients who had been admitted to the Emergency S...
متن کامل[The measurement of pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide].
The pulmonary diffusing capacity for oxygen (DLo,) is of great physiological and clinical significance (1). Its measurement, however, is relatively complex (2). Pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLco) which, it is usually assumed,' can be converted to DL02 from the known solubilities and molecular weights of the two gases, is, in general, more readily measured. Further, since th...
متن کاملROCKing pulmonary fibrosis.
Clinical vignette: A 76-year-old man consults you for increasing shortness of breath over the past two years and an increasing requirement for home oxygen. A video-assisted thoracoscopic lung biopsy shows findings of usual interstitial pneumonitis, and he has no identifiable cause for pulmonary fibrosis, so he is considered to have idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). His diffusing capacity for...
